Prague was one of the favorite destinations for tourists. Tens of thousands of people visited the city every day. Now it is mainly locals and people from other parts of the Czech Republic. Guests from outside the country are not visiting the city because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the city has changed too, the bars and restaurants lowered the prices, the hotels and Airbnb rentals are cheaper and the ad signs in the street are in Czech. Yet Prague was so adapted to the countless number of tourists that the money exchange offices and souvenir shops that are everywhere in the city stand now empty or closed.
Janek Rubes, a YouTuber whose channel “Honest Guide” shows some original sights of Prague, said that before the pandemic, the situation was unbearable and the people of Prague felt like strangers in their own city. Over 8 million tourists visited Prague in 2019 and the majority of them used to stroll the Royal Route. Prague, like Venice and Amsterdam, has a problem with over tourism. Once the pandemic is over the tourism will continue to grow and the city tries to prepare now. Mayor of the city Zdenek Hrib is working on the new regulations that will limit the number of tourists.
Tourism is growing, what about the digital economy?
The COVID-19 pandemic made the importance of the digital economy clear. When all the traditional industries were forced to shut down or considerably limit their work, digital businesses continued working and some even grew. European Commission developed a strategy for Europe’s digital future. Digital technologies are expected to help the European Union reach climate neutrality.
Three streams of action are developing and adopting technologies that work for people, developing a fair and competitive digital economy, and ensuring a fair, democratic, and sustainable society. It is important to ensure that digital technologies are accessible to all Europeans. The European Commission will work on developing a safe environment where people are protected from cyber threats and where Artificial Intelligence is used in a way that does not violate people’s privacy. City of Prague announces new online testing map, mandatory disinfection
The Security Council of Prague held a special meeting to discuss the spread of the COVID-19 around the city. The council announced new, stricter regulations to prevent the spread of the virus in the city. As of September 14th, the businesses that sell goods will have to ensure their employees and clients have the means to disinfect at the entrance. The Prague Hygiene Station will only allow the restaurants and other food establishments to be open between six in the morning and midnight.
The canteens that are not open to the public and served employees can stay open. The city wants to create an online map for the COVID-19 testing points. Currently, the information provided by the government is not enough so there are long queues at the testing points. The information about the capacities of private laboratories in the city of Prague as well as in the Central Bohemian Region will also be included in the map. The city will recruit volunteers who will assist the hygienists in their work and help trace the spread
