Many Spaniards are already on their much-anticipated summer vacations. And it’s because after a hard year of work, we all need a few days or weeks to relax and spend time with family and friends without being connected to work. If you want to rent or drive your own car in a foreign country during the holidays, you need to know what paperwork you need to bring with you.

Inside of the European Union

Inside of the European Union, If you want to drive in the European Union or the European Economic Area which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, you don’t need a special permit because your Spanish driver’s license is good as long as it’s still valid. Remember that you can renew your card up to three months before it expires if it is about to expire. Don’t forget to carry your personal paperwork at all times (DNI or passport).

You can also drive in Andorra, Algeria, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, South Korea, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Japan, Morocco, Nicaragua, Peru, Dominican Republic, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, El Salvador, Philippines, Guatemala, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, and Macedonia, all of which have signed international agreements with Spain.

But these agreements could change, so if you go to any of these countries, we suggest that you bring your Spanish international permit card with you. You could also go to the consulate or tourist office of the country you want to visit before your trip and ask if there is an agreement or if you need to get an international permit.

In the rest of the countries
