Drone technology has been around since 1935, but it only became popular in the U.S. in 2015. Worldwide, you could say that drones gained traction in 2018. So, it’s safe to say that the drone field is still blooming and is far from saturated. If you’re currently thinking about taking the leap, grabbing a controller, and flying your own drone, recreationally or otherwise, this article is perfect for you. Here is a quick list of everything you need to know about drone technology and training.

1. They Pack Extensive Features

Each type of drone comes with its own set of features and specifications. In other words, drone features vary greatly depending on their use. Some come fitted with high-definition cameras, others with mapping sensors and obstacle detectors. Some drones are designed to carry heavy loads, others to cross long distances.

2. They Have Unlimited Uses

With drone technology’s wide range of features come unlimited uses. If you do a little bit of research, you’ll find that drones can be used in filmmaking, construction, military missions, oil exploration, mapping, surveillance; the list goes on.

3. You Need to Be Certified to Pilot A Commercial Drone

While flying a drone for fun doesn’t require a specific certification, you can’t operate a drone for non-recreational purposes without one. First, you’ll need to undergo Drone Technology Training which includes practical and theoretical components. After you get your certificate through a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approved institution, you can fly your drone professionally.

4. There are Drone Flying Laws in Australia

Even though drone technology is relatively new, there are laws designed to regulate their use. If you reside in Australia, the laws include: flying only during the day, flying under 120 meters, and refraining from flying above people. Before you take to the sky, make sure you’ve familiarized yourself with your country’s and state’s drone laws.

5. Drone Software aren’t Equal

As we’ve mentioned above, drones come with various features and are used for plenty of purposes. Before you buy a drone, it’s important that you make sure the operating software fits your needs.

If you love piloting drones, the good news is that you can make a good living doing it. Certified commercial drone pilots charge a minimum of $25 (A$35) per hour, but the rates can vary greatly – from a couple of dollars more, to tens more. It all depends on the industry you’re working in, your tasks, the distance to cover, any risk factors, as well as a few other factors.
