In collaboration with Indian comic book publisher Amar Chitra Katha, Google launched its global ‘Be Internet Awesome’ programme for youngsters in India on Wednesday. The programme will interweave key internet safety teachings across eight Indian languages. As part of its attempts to improve internet user safety, the tech giant has also developed an updated Google Safety Centre in eight Indian languages.

Google has dramatically boosted its resources committed to India’s Trust Safety teams, which include product policy analysts, security professionals, and user trust experts who support over 10 Indian vernacular languages, allowing Google’s core teams to benefit from local subtlety and feedback.

This will aid Google India’s efforts to combat misinformation, fraud, child safety issues, violent extremism, phishing assaults, and malware. It will also bolster Google’s global trust and safety operations, which employ more than 20,000 employees committed to detecting, combating, and preventing online abuse.

“Our north star is to make the internet useful for a billion Indians…Every day, more people are putting their trust in the internet and adopting new services, and all of us in the technology industry have a responsibility to honour their trust,” Sanjay Gupta, Google India Country Manager and Vice-President, said at the ‘Google for India’ virtual event.

He went on to say that Google takes great care with customer data and provides them complete control over it.
“As technology becomes more accessible, the hurdles for bad actors become lower as well, necessitating a coordinated effort to improve trust. We must ensure that our children use the internet safely to learn and explore the world.

“Women must have equal access to the internet without worry for their safety,” Gupta said. “People across the country should feel confident that they and their money are safe when they’re online.”

Gupta noted that internet users in India have varying levels of digital maturity, and that it is “critical” to increase efforts to increase people’s trust in online services so they can “fully trust the services they use online and always know what to expect from them,” whether they are experienced with the internet or are just getting started.

Gupta emphasised that “we cannot leave the doors open for the bad actors” in order to develop a foundation of trust for the internet, and that industry must play a role, especially as new dangers emerge.

“Cutting-edge developments have the potential to make the internet safer, just as they have made it more open, inclusive, and dynamic. India will help to create the future of an internet that is safer for everyone. Building a safer internet for everyone isn’t just a good idea; it’s the right thing to do “Added he.

The newly enlarged safety centre, which will be available in Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu by the end of the year, will serve as a single destination for critical themes such as data security, privacy controls, and online precautions.

The ‘Be Internet Awesome’ campaign features an interactive experience called ‘Interland,’ where kids can play a series of entertaining and difficult activities while learning how to protect sensitive information, outsmart cyber bullies, and recognise what’s genuine and what’s not when they’re online.

This gamified curriculum will also be included in the renowned Amar Chitra Katha series, which is available in eight Indian languages.

Vint Cerf, Google’s vice-president and top internet evangelist, noted at the event that the internet one encounters today has exceeded all of his initial expectations.

Cerf, known as the “Father of the Internet,” stated that while decreased barriers to internet access have helped consumers all over the world, evil actors have also gotten access.
“We cannot take the internet for granted, given the increasing user adoption and relevance of digital connectivity to India’s economy.

“Since the epidemic broke, there has been a greater need to increase internet and application safety and security, reliability and privacy, and overall resilience,” he added.

Google’s vice-president of trust and safety, Kristie Canegallo, said the business is aware of the need for a complete approach that includes teams working with technology, user education, clear and robust regulations, and collaboration with key stakeholders.

Google’s current measures are backed up by a slew of new global regulations, including product modifications to Google accounts for persons under the age of 18 in areas including YouTube, search, location history, Play, and Google Workspace for Education.

Gmail stops over 100 million phishing attempts and 15 billion spam messages per day, according to Canegallo, while Google Play Protect scans 100 billion apps per day. In 2020, the corporation will have blocked or removed over 3.1 billion adverts for breaking its regulations. GPay provides daily safety alerts to over one lakh subscribers in India.

“We invest over a billion dollars every year in content moderation systems and processes, and we expect this to continue,” she said.

Sameer Samat, Google’s Vice President of Android and Google Play, said the company is collaborating with Jio to “bring a fully-fledged device (JioPhone Next) built with optimisations, Android operating system, and Google Play, aimed at serving the needs of many who have never used a smartphone before.”

Google’s vice president of engineering (Android security and privacy), David Kleidermacher, stated that the company has increased its efforts to provide a privacy-first experience on its Android operating system.

He said, “We’re also considerably growing our Google Play support staff in India.”

Kleidermacher referenced Google’s recent clarifications on personal loan app regulations, which include new requirements aimed at helping to protect customers while allowing legitimate developers to exist and thrive.
