OpenAI CTO Details How ChatGPT Will Evolve: Voice, Deep Thought, and Revolution

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati wasn’t always sure ChatGPT would succeed. When she joined in 2018, AI lacked language understanding. By 2019, GPT-3 showed progress, but she remained skeptical. The pace since has been “incredibly steep,” Murati said.

She detailed how users can expect ChatGPT to evolve as the technology advances further.

Voice Interactions to Replace Typing

ChatGPT may soon enable voice conversations, moving “away from the keyboard,” per Murati.

She envisions users chatting with ChatGPT naturally: “That is really the goal – to interact with these AI systems in a way that’s actually natural.”

Potential hardware for voice interactions is unclear, though ex-Apple designer Jony Ive is reportedly planning an “iPhone for AI” with OpenAI.

Thinking More Abstractly and Accurately

Currently, bots collaborate and respond. The goal is bots that think independently, says Murati.

“What’s missing right now is new ideas,” like Einstein’s theory of relativity. Abstract thought is needed for “extremely hard problems” we can’t solve today.

For everyday users, increased accuracy should also come from deeper thinking. Answers could be Wikipedia-quality or better, “more scientific-level accuracy,” Murati stated.

Major Disruptions to How Humans Work and Learn

Murati acknowledged risks and opportunities from disrupting how we work and learn. Students using ChatGPT to complete assignments may necessitate educational changes.

But AI could enable personalized tutoring: “This is what AI can offer.”

Major job losses may occur, requiring preparation “for this new way of life.” Work weeks could drastically change.

Public and Government to Shape the AI Revolution

Murati admitted OpenAI lacks answers on societal impacts. “We’re gonna have to figure them out,” requiring thoughtful policymaking.

The public and government will determine how much AI affects lives. The revolution is coming either way.
