The 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros are causing a stir in the tech world, but the new AirPods, which were revealed during Apple’s “Unleashed” event yesterday (October 18, 2021), are also causing a stir. Apple has officially unveiled a new pair of true wireless earbuds that will be available on October 26th for $179, while the entry-level AirPods 2 will be available for $129.
With the exception of active noise cancellation, the third-generation AirPods are nearly identical to its sleeker sibling, the AirPods Pro, in terms of design and functionality. The AirPods now have a broader, Pro-like charging case and shorter steams for the first time since 2016. They also have Pro features like Adaptive EQ, which allows you to customise your audio experience, and a simple force sensor for media control. Apple has also included support for the same head-tracking features found on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, as well as Apple’s spatial audio, which enables for a more immersive listening experience while listening to content from Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, and other services.
The new AirPods are sweat- and water-resistant, and they work with Apple’s MagSafe charging system, unlike their predecessors. The enhanced battery life on the third-generation device, according to Apple, gives up to six hours of continuous listening, or 30 hours with the supplied charging case. We haven’t yet put these assertions to the test, but we plan to do so in the coming weeks.
How do I Order the Third-Generation Airpods in Advance?
Unlike the previous generation of AirPods, which were sold without a wireless charging case, the new AirPods are only available in one configuration for $179. That’s $20 less than the price of the second-generation AirPods with wireless charging case, which were released in 2019.
If you’re interested in preordering the new AirPods before they go on sale, you may do so starting today at the Apple Store. On Tuesday, October 26th, they will be available.
