As the year draws to a close, Time magazine named Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as their “Person of the Year” (POTY) for 2021. While Musk’s selection as Person of the Year was not unexpected, it elicited a wide range of emotions online, with many believing there were more suitable contenders. Since the news, the internet has been buzzing with anything from jokes to photoshopped covers of other notable people.

Musk won the coveted distinction after a year that saw his electric vehicle company become the world’s most valuable automaker and his rocket company soar with an all-civilian crew. This year, Musk, who also runs Neuralink, a brain-chip startup, and The Boring Company, an infrastructure company, experienced some incredible growth and inventions. This year, Tesla’s market worth rose to more than $1 trillion, making him the world’s richest man.

“The world’s richest man does not own a home and has recently been selling off his fortune,” the magazine stated, while praising his contributions to space missions and self-driving cars. “The stock market soars or swoons with a flick of his finger.” “An army of admirers awaits his every word,” the magazine noted, noting that the previous year had seen a frenzy of bitcoin based on his tweets and memes.

Musk arrived at the Time event with his kid, X A-12, who has been a social media star in recent months.

“Elon Musk is TIME’s 2021 Person of the Year,” the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Edward Felsenthal, said. “For creating solutions to an existential crisis, for embodying the possibilities and perils of the age of tech titans, for driving society’s most daring and disruptive transformations, Elon Musk is TIME’s 2021 Person of the Year.”

As soon as the news was released, a slew of memes sprung up to congratulate him on his latest success. The billionaire himself laughed at one mock edit of the cover.

However, not everyone was impressed with the pick, and several recommended other candidates who should have won the award, as many used the chance to reignite the ‘tax the rich’ issue. Many names were suggested by netizens, including Dolly Patron, Britney Spears, and the police officer who managed the Capitol Hill disturbance.
