WhatsApp has lately been seen experimenting with end-to-end encrypted cloud backups. According to a source, the modification is being rolled out to beta testers on both Android and iOS devices. WhatsApp’s latest upgrade promises to secure Google Drive and iCloud backups by allowing users to encrypt them. Message history and media files stored in WhatsApp backups gain an extra degree of security as a result of this process. Separately, the instant messaging app was seen updating the contact info part of the Android app, which could soon be available to beta testers.
The Facebook-owned messaging app has begun testing end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for iPhone users using WhatsApp for iOS beta version 2.21.200.14, according to WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp beta versions. WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.21.21.5 is also believed to have begun sending out the end-to-end encrypted backup option to select beta testers.
WhatsApp unveiled end-to-end encrypted cloud backups as an optional feature earlier this month, allowing users to secure their chat history and media files stored on Google Drive and iCloud. The news came months after WhatsApp was found internally testing the function. The instant messaging app, on the other hand, has not said when the feature would be available to end customers.
By setting end-to-end encrypted backups, you will be able to safeguard your WhatsApp conversation content from third parties, such as Google and Apple, who provide cloud storage for the backups. WhatsApp also stated that even its own staff is unable to read the content of end-to-end encrypted backups.
It’s worth noting that users will need to remember a password in order to add the new layer of security to their backups. The encrypted backup will not be restored if a user forgets their password and loses their phone.
WhatsApp also demonstrated the ability to add the end-to-end encryption layer to backups using a 64-bit encryption key rather than a new password. However, photos released by WABetaInfo imply that encryption key support for Android beta testers isn’t yet available. The upgrade was not visible in the newest WhatsApp beta for Android smartphones, according to Gadgets 360.
Along with end-to-end encrypted backups, WhatsApp has been discovered to be testing a revamped contact details area for Android users, in which users will find the existing Chat, Audio, and Video options directly below their contacts’ profile photos. A screenshot has been posted by WABetaInfo to suggest the change. Some references to the upgrade have been found in WhatsApp for Android beta 2.21.21.6, while the modifications have yet to be seen in the most recent beta version.
WhatsApp was previously seen working on a revamped contact/group card interface for Android, which appears when you tap a contact’s or group’s profile photo from your chat list. Below the profile photo of a contact or group, there were also Chat, Audio, and Video options on that card.
