iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Which Phone Should You Buy?

Spread the love

Even though we don’t know the exact date yet, we do know that the new iPhone 14 will be released in mid-September or early October at the latest. Many people are already looking forward to this launch so they can get the latest technology from Apple. But some people will probably also wonder if it’s worth spending all their money on this new gadget or if it might be better to buy an iPhone 13 instead.

Let’s say that you want to buy an Apple smartphone right now. You already have the money to buy it, so all you need to do is decide to go to the store. What is the best thing to do? Should you buy 13 or wait for 14?

A complex decision

We’ll start by saying that, according to most reports about the iPhone 14, this would be Apple’s biggest step forward in terms of devices in recent years. This means that the iPhone 14 could be much better than its predecessor. But that doesn’t mean you have to buy the most recent one. Given how powerful Apple’s phones are right now, the iPhone 13 could be a good choice for many.

The price is, of course, a plus. Even though we already know how much Apple’s new devices will cost when they come out, the price of the iPhone 13 has already started to go down at different stores. If you just want a new smartphone, this could save you a lot of money.

So…which 13-inch iPhone would be best to buy? For this, we would have to say that you should buy either the iPhone Pro or the Pro Max, which are both high-end models. This is because Apple has a pattern where the first two devices in a line have the same features as the top device in the last line. So, the basic iPhone 14 and the other first phone will have the same features as the high-end iPhone 13. So, if you want to get an iPhone 13, the best advice is to get a high-end model or at least buy a lot of memory.

Let’s also remember that, at least for the past few years, most Apple iPhones last longer than 4 years and are useful for a long time. So if you buy the iPhone 13, you won’t have to worry about being behind the times for a while, and maybe not until the iPhone 15 or 16 comes out (if they still have those names).

If you have enough money, the higher-end versions of the iPhone 14 may be a good choice. They are expected to have the best design and system updates, as well as a better camera and, maybe, a better battery. The truth is that this could be a much bigger investment, so it all comes down to how much money you have.

But the best advice we can give is to wait until the iPhone 14 comes out so that all the features are known and you can buy smartphones better.

iPhone 14: price

The price of the iPhone 14 hasn’t been officially announced yet. But since the standard iPhone 13 starts at £679, $699, or AUS$1199, we’d expect the iPhone 14 to cost about the same.

The iPhone 13 came out in the UK for £20 less than the iPhone 12. Fingers crossed that the trend keeps going down, but if one rumor is true, that may be wishful thinking.

It comes from iDropNews, which says that insiders at Apple have told them that higher prices are being talked about. The standard iPhone 14 would start at $799, while the bigger iPhone 14 Max would cost $100 more, at $899 (about £650 or AU$1200). That would make the price of the Pro model go up to $1099, which is $100 more than the $999 price of the iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro Max would also cost $1199, which is $100 more than the price of the current iPhone 13 Pro Max.

iPhone 14: design

The iPhone 14 is likely to get a big makeover, starting with the way it looks. In short, Apple’s next phone might not look anything like the iPhone 13.

Jon Prosser of FrontPageTech gave us a “closer look at the iPhone 14” in September of 2021. The reputable leaker put out a bunch of renders, like the one above, that look like they show the iPhone 14. If Prosser is right, the next Apple phone will have “titanium edges,” making it the toughest iPhone yet.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg spoke up right away. The well-known Apple watcher thinks that the iPhone 14 will get a “complete redesign” and that the 5.4-inch iPhone Mini is probably dead and gone.

Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo, who is thought to be the most reliable Apple analyst on the scene, seem to agree on a lot of things. Kuo says that Apple will release four iPhone 14 models in 2022, including a new “affordable” iPhone Max to replace the iPhone Mini, which will no longer be made.

The iPhone 14 family could look like this:

  • The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch screen.
  • The 6.7-inch screen on the iPhone 14 Max
  • The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch, 120Hz screen.
  • The 6.7-inch 120Hz screen on the iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • Case plans that got out in April 2022 backed up this lineup.

In December 2021, The Elec, a Korean website, said what it thought. It says, like Prosser, that the two new “Pro” models of the iPhone 14 will have new “hole-punch” screens. In other words, Apple will (finally) start to get rid of the iPhone X’s ugly camera notch in favor of a much nicer “pinhole” selfie camera. We have faith.

Other rumors say that the notch will be replaced by a longer, “pill-shaped” cutout. But display industry expert Ross Young (via MacRumors) thinks both are true and that Apple will use both the hole punch and the pill-shaped cutouts. This design is now called “hole + pill” and is backed by well-known analyst Jon Prosser. Young says that each cutout will be used for something different. The round “hole punch” cutout will hold the Face ID dot projector, and the pill-shaped cutout will hold the front-facing camera and the Face ID infrared camera.

Only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are likely to have the new cutouts. For at least another year, the cheaper iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are likely to keep the same cutout as the iPhone 13.

The Pro and Pro Max could also get thinner bezels than their siblings who aren’t Pro. Ice universe tweeted pictures of the new design, so we know this to be true. The screen on the iPhone 14 Pro should still be 6.1 inches and the screen on the iPhone 14 Pro Max should be 6.7 inches. However, if the bezels were thinner, the screen could have more or bigger pixels and less space would be wasted.

There are rumors that Touch ID will come back in 2022. Leaks from an anonymous source ApplePro thinks it’s being tested on the iPhone 14 Proline (in addition to Face ID, of course). Since Apple tried Touch ID on the iPhone 13 Pro and then got rid of it, we wouldn’t put too much stock in this rumor.

iPhone 14: display

The iPhone 13 has a Super Retina XDR OLED screen, while the Pro and Pro Max have Apple’s ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate technology, which is meant to make video and scrolling even smoother.

Why do we have to tell you this? We think the iPhone 14’s screen will be as good as or better than the iPhone 13’s. Could all four iPhone 14 models come out with the fancy 120Hz ProMotion screens?

Unlikely. A recent report from The Elec says that “at least one” of the four iPhone 14 models, which we’d assume is the standard iPhone 14, will stick with a 60Hz LTPS screen. Of course, this does make it more likely that up to three of the devices could have 120Hz LTPO screens like the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
