The era of pure and basic text chatting existed before WhatsApp, Signal, and even Internet Messaging. It was a unique, lovely time when you could say all you wanted in 160 characters or less, and each message was either charged monetarily or deducted from your total SMS limit.
The first text message was sent 30 years ago, in 1992, and was received by a Vodafone employee in the United Kingdom. The letter greeted the receiver “Merry Christmas,” and the networking behemoth is now auctioning it off as an NFT.
Engineer Neil Papworth of Newbury, Berkshire, transmitted the message to Richard Jarvis. Papworth worked for Vodafone as a test engineer on the Short Message Service (which will eventually be known as SMS).
On December 3, 1992, the message was successfully sent to the Orbitel 901 handset. After the first message was sent, mobile phone manufacturers began to include the ability to receive and transmit text messages, with Nokia being the first to do so.
Aguttes, France’s first independent auction house, will hold the NFT auction for the world’s first SMS on December 21, 2021, in Paris. Bidders can, however, submit their bids online.
The NFT will be one-of-a-kind, and Vodafone has stated that it will not issue another NFT based on the world’s first SMS.
The buyer will receive a certificate certifying the message’s authenticity, which will be signed by Vodafone Group CEO Nick Read. Furthermore, the company will provide the customer with a detailed reproduction of the original communication protocol generated by Vodafone, as well as documents of the sending/receiving of SMS and a replica of the original communication protocol as TXT and PDF files.
Vodafone expects to be paid more than $200,000 for this NFT. The auction proceeds will be donated to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to assist 82.4 million individuals who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution.
