Apple Announces Self-Service Repair Program for iPhone Users

Apple has reversed direction and introduced a self-service repair program for the first time, after years of doing everything it could to prevent users from mending their own devices.

The program will begin with iPhone 12 and 13 handsets in the United States “early next year,” followed by Mac laptops with M1 chips.

The program will function as follows in practice: Customers should first go over the official repair manual before ordering components and tools from the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store. Customers who return discarded components for recycling after the repair is completed will receive credit against their future purchases. Apple claims that the store would have over 200 different parts and tools.

While this is fantastic news for do-it-yourselfers, Apple notes that the program is only for “individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic products.” According to the firm, the majority of customers should seek professional assistance.

In a statement, Apple’s chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, stated, “Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed.” “In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

Apple has previously been averse to consumers repairing their iPhones and Macs. The company’s opposition to the idea included everything from using proprietary screws on its products to blocking Face ID following an unauthorized display update (Apple recently backpedaled on this one). With right-to-repair laws approaching in an increasing number of markets, the corporation is likely to take matters into its own hands before being forced to do so by law.

The program will begin in the United States and expand to other nations “throughout 2022,” according to Apple.
