PS5 New Hardware Revision: What to Expect from the Updated Model

Sony has discreetly and entirely redesigned the internals of its recently updated PS5 – PS5 New Hardware Revision. The current edition, with the CFI-1200 number, made its way around Australia this week, claiming to be 200 grams lighter than the original CFI-1100 variant. Austin Evans, a tech YouTuber, took on the task of disassembling the upgraded PS5 system and revealing its internals in order to figure out what’s changed. Changes to the heatsink and an upgraded motherboard are the key attractions, although the outside plastic shroud stays unchanged.

Evans demolished the CFI-1100 model PS5 last year, causing controversy by saying that the smaller heatsink might cause terrible thermal throttling concerns. Digital Foundry dismissed the theory, claiming that the temperature flow was the same as the launch model, the CF-1000. What’s intriguing is that these new, lighter PS5 models began appearing in Australian stores shortly after Sony raised pricing in several European, Middle Eastern, and Asian areas. Prices for the PS5 remain unchanged in India and the United States.

According to Evans’ dismantling and testing, the new PS5 1200 model uses 20-30W less power while producing “approximately” the same noise and heat. The revised motherboard is two inches smaller, and the cooling system receives an additional heat pipe to compensate for the smaller heatsink. As a result of these adjustments, the PS5 weighs 3.3kg, which is approximately 200gm lighter than the launch variant, the CFI-1000. Keep in mind that the figures are for the digital, disc-free version of the game console.

Sony has also redesigned the SSD casing, exposing the housing to promote heat dissipation by chopping down the PCB (printed circuit board). Returning to the motherboard, Sony has now hidden the CMOS battery beneath the heatsink, which was previously exposed. That is, if you need to reset/restart the PlayStation 5 (due to a crash) or just diagnose it, you will need to disassemble the complete machine. Evans also mentions that Sony has reduced internal packaging costs, making it lighter and less expensive to build.

Sony also issued a new PS5 software update on Wednesday, which features 1440p resolution support, a new gamelists function, and UI improvements. The corporation began testing the features in July, with beta software users having access. The update allows PS5 owners to select 1440p as the output resolution on compatible displays, allowing supported titles to run in the native resolution.
