At this year’s “Far Out” launch event, Apple introduced a brand-new edition of its Apple Watch called the “Ultra,” which has generated a lot of discussion. It is larger, chunkier, has better hardware, and was created with a very specific group of consumers in mind. The Apple Watch Ultra also succeeded in outperforming the regular Apple Watch Series 8 in terms of popularity. There are some improvements over the Series 7 in the new model, but not as many as we had hoped. Should you stick with (or upgrade to) the Series 7 instead of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 8?
Apple Watch Series 8 Review and Price
There are two case sizes – 41mm and 45mm – and two case finishes for the Apple Watch Series 8 available (aluminium and stainless steel). When selecting an Apple Watch, connectivity is another factor to consider. The GPS model or the GPS + cellular model is available here.
For the GPS variant and the GPS + cellular model, the Apple Watch Series 8 with the 41mm aluminium body starts at Rs. 45,900 and Rs. 55,900, respectively. Priced at Rs. 48,900 for the GPS model and Rs. 58,900 for the GPS + cellular option, the Series 8 has a 45mm aluminum case. The Apple Watch Series 8 stainless steel models cost more than Rs. 74,900 and are only offered in GPS + cellular configurations for the base 41mm case.
Apple Watch Series 8 Features and Design
The Apple Watch’s appearance hasn’t altered much throughout the years. With the Apple Watch Series 7 last year, we received a larger display; this year’s model also features the same display. Actually, there are no visible differences in appearance between the two watches unless you turn them over and look closely at the rear casing, which now reads “Series 8” rather than “Series 7”. Depending on the case size, even the older bands from the Series 7 can be used with the Apple Watch Series 8.
The new Apple Watch Series 8 maintains the same level of quality and fit and finish as its predecessors, which is to say it is excellent. I used the smartwatch with the Summit White/Black Nike Sport Band, which can be purchased separately for Rs. 4,500, rather than the regular black Sport Band (made of silicone) that came with my watch. The Series 8 felt really comfortable to wear, even though it weighed 38.8g, whether I was working, exercising, or doing other activities. In fact, I even wore it to bed, which is something I don’t generally do with regular watches.
Apple Watch Series 8 Specifications
The 1.9-inch LTPO OLED display on the Apple Watch Series 8 is identical to that on the Series 7 and has a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and a maximum brightness of 500 nits when it is constantly on. Because of how bright the display is, I had no trouble using it outside in the blazing afternoon light. Every watch face in the Face Gallery works flawlessly with the always-on implementation.
This works well with both the Portrait watch face, which dims the photo to a level where it’s still feasible to view and enjoy every photo when in this always-on condition, and the usual watch faces that display information (time, date, weather, etc.). This makes it quick and simple to quickly glance at information on a watch face without constantly flicking my wrist to wake the display.
When utilizing watchOS 9 and the new S8 SiP, performance is fluid and responsive, whether you are launching and running apps, using the watch to track workouts, or simply switching between the gorgeous watch faces. Playtime is one of the new watch faces, which displays colorful inflated numerals that go in and out of the display to show the time.
Verdict
With watchOS 9, owners of the Apple Watch Series 8 can now accurately measure their sleep as well as track their health and fitness. The battery life, which Apple appears to have addressed with the Apple Watch Ultra but which isn’t really aimed at the typical iPhone user, hasn’t altered or gotten much better. Crash Detection is a feature that is currently exclusive to the 2022 Apple Watch models and has not yet been explored by any other major smartwatch maker.
However, the Apple Watch Series 8 offers only tiny incremental enhancements and this time, essentially no visual changes, similar to the Apple Watch Series 7. If you currently own an Apple Watch Series 7, there is practically no reason to upgrade unless you really require capabilities like crash detection and ovulation tracking. I would advise waiting for a good offer and purchasing the Apple Watch Series 7 at a reduced price if you are looking to upgrade from an Apple Watch Series 5 (or older). Since the Series 8 is currently priced at Rs. 45,900, the Series 7’s starting price of about Rs. 39,000 (online) is incomprehensible.
Check out the Apple Watch Ultra if you use an Apple Watch and simply yearn for something different. Given its huge dial size, it is obviously designed for the more adventurous type, but those seeking longer battery life, a larger display, and who don’t mind the steep price may find it appealing.
