What We Know about 7G Network?

Spain has only had 5G for a little over three years, but some people are already talking about 6G and even 7G.

Even though the rollout of 5G connectivity is still going on and the race to see which countries and companies will dominate it is still going on, the fast growth of mobile phone networks over the last 20 years means that changes are always possible.

Companies like Samsung, Huawei, Nokia, and OPPO have already put out information about what they think will happen when 6G is common in our devices. And it is thought that it won’t come until the fork is at least 8 to 10 years old.

But what do we know about 7G and what should we expect? Well, it seems early, but he probably knows more than his predecessors did at the same age. Other new technologies that are already being used, like metaverses, high-performance computing, the development of artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, make us think about how we need to be able to work with a lot of data. Something that is thought to bring out the best in the 7G infrastructure.

From Generation to Generation

With each new generation of the mobile wireless network, the speed goes up, the frequency and technology change and the latency goes down. In all of these ways, 6G connectivity will be better than 5G in the next generation. But each evolution also brings a physical challenge, which is why radio waves have to be used at higher frequencies.

To give you an idea, 4G goes up to 6 GHz, 5G goes up to 110 GHz, and 6G and 7G are likely to need terahertz frequency bands.

All of this has made it possible for the speed of our devices to change in a way that is crazy when we look at it in the big picture. From MMS messages that took a while to load to the fact that we can now have video calls without interruptions, connect our car to the network, play games in the cloud that seemed impossible to work if they weren’t locally, watch videos on TikTok without stopping, or that a team of surgeons in Madrid can operate remotely on a patient in Mexico.

These are changes that will really make a difference in our lives and help us start new businesses. So, the ability to build these infrastructures is both an economic and, in some ways, a geopolitical race.

And What is Expected to Enable 7G?

As you can imagine, 7G is expected to let us use even higher frequencies and get much lower latency in communications. “7G will meet the need for a very high bandwidth, almost no latency, and universal integration,” says the IEEE, which is a global organization that works to standardize and spread these technologies.

7G networks will create data collection and communication standards that will lead to huge improvements in data analytics, the development of Artificial General Intelligence, and next-generation computing capabilities through high-performance and quantum computing.

Of course, they don’t aim low, but twenty years ago, it would have sounded like science fiction to think that the evolution of telecommunications would let you watch full movies on your phone.

One of the main things that can make 7G stand out is that the infrastructure is expected to be able to decide on its own where or on what device computing should take place.

So, the network will be much more flexible and able to figure out which point of the connection has the best qualities to handle the heaviest operations they are expected to support. This will be especially important and helpful at a close level in home automation systems, where the network will know if it is best to do the most demanding tasks on one device or another.

This could have many benefits once 7G is up and running, including giving AI even more power by letting it send and work with a lot more data.

The IEEE has marked some areas where they think that 7G will have a big impact, like public safety and other important issues.

In these fields, AI is being used to improve things like threat detection and crime control (for example, thanks to a better connection, an AI can spot suspicious behavior in a crowd) or how to respond to disasters.

Also, it is thought that the improvement in technology will have an effect on reading and health control, or, and this may be the most surprising, it will make mind-machine connections, like the ones Neuralink, Elon Musk’s company, is working on, much more possible. Putting aside the technical details, the main improvement is simple: with this connectivity, devices of this type will be able to expand the mouth of the funnel through which they take in data, making them more complex.

When could 7G Arrive?

Since 5G is still being rolled out and 6G is still being studied, it is safe to say that we still have a long way to go. But if you look at how connectivity has changed logically, you can see about 20 years ahead.

“Generally speaking, there is a 10-year gap between one Generation and the next, regardless of the frame of reference used (early testing, early deployment, mass market adoption, or even death). Based on this, Roberto Saracco, a computer engineer and member of the IEEE, says that since 5G will be widely used around the year 2025, 6G should come after 10 years, around the year 2035, and 7G after another 10 years, around the year 2045.

But its progress is limited, just like that of 6G. The most important one is about materials. Both the infrastructure and the use of higher and higher frequencies, as well as the batteries in our devices, which many people see as the biggest problem to solve, need to be improved and made to work better. At least so that a possible 7G can work as well as it can.

If we look at our mobile phones as an example, the more processing power that 7G will give them will also mean that they will use more batteries and need better materials and systems to get rid of the heat they will make.

Concerning the problems caused by the structure itself, since 7G needs a higher frequency, there will be problems with propagation. This means that more antennas, more wireless capacity, and a big investment will be needed. All of these things require that institutions, states, and the private sector come to an agreement, which has already led to some disagreements in the way 5G is being used.
